Natural gas (NG) is considered a cleaner option than other fossil fuels. For the past few years, ICL has been converting the energy systems at its major production sites in Israel to NG, replacing fuels such as fuel oil (Mazut), diesel and naphtha.
By the end of 2020, 95% (40/42) of ICL Israel’s main energy-consuming installations were converted into NG, and 90% of total remote fuel consumption of ICL’s global facilities was derived from Natural Gas. During 2016 two ICL China Sites (Shandong, YBKGT) transitioned from coal and diesel to liquid natural gas (LNG), and in 2017-8 ICL Rotem Zin and ICL Haifa (F&C) transitioned from fuel oil to NG. The shale oil fired plant at the Rotem site is due to be replaced by a more efficient natural gas fired plant by 2022. The economic savings created by this strategic transition are estimated at over USD 80 million annually.
