For several decades, peat has been the most widely known and used component for soilless crops worldwide. Environmental concerns regarding the impact of CO2 release and disturbance to biodiversity during peat management and extraction has led the British government to establish a voluntary target to phase out peat and promote the development and use of non-peat sustainable materials.
One such alternative is a by-product of the timber industry. Wood particles from sawmills are processed to create “woodfibre”. This non-peat substrate is suitable for blending with peat and other non-peat alternatives for the soilless cultivation of edible and ornamental crops.
ICL’s “Fibagro Advance”-branded woodfibre is manufactured from sustainable materials locally sourced and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

In response to the British government’s voluntary target to eliminate the extraction and usage of peat in growing media in the U.K. by 2030, ICL has recently invested £1 million in woodfibre production. In addition, ICL continues to support and invest in R&D that is exploring the potential and development of further sustainable materials to create the next generation of horticultural substrates.
